Hitman 1: Codename 47

Overview

The Hitman, codenamed "47", wakes up strapped to a sparse bed in a padded room, in hospital garb. A disembodied voice over a loudspeaker releases him and subjects him to a series of obstacle courses where he is instructed in firearms and murder techniques. 47 is eventually led to a pair of guards, whom he murders in order to escape captivity. The story then picks up a year later, rejoining 47 as a professional assassin in the employ of the International Contract Agency (ICA). 47 is sent around the globe on a series of missions to eliminate four global criminal masterminds, all while trying to unravel the secret behind his origin.
Unlike most shooters, where the player is thrust into a hostile world and must kill to survive, Hitman: Codename 47 generally takes place in neutral environments such as hotels, restaurants, or city streets, and the onus is on 47 to initiate the violence. However, unlike later games in the series, violence is mandatory and there are several levels where getting into a large-scale gunfight against dozens of guards is inevitable. This is particularly true concerning a level that takes place in the Colombian jungle where the player battles South American drug cartel soldiers, a group of levels criticized by some players as being inconsistent with the covert tone of the game.
Compared to later games in the series, Hitman: Codename 47's gameplay is more simplistic. There is no "suspicion" meter, so guards will always leave 47 alone as long as he's wearing the right disguise, and not openly wielding a weapon which does not suit his attire. Indeed, the Caucasian 47 attracts no suspicion even when disguised as another nationality altogether, something that is not true of later games in the franchise. On a technological note, Hitman: Codename 47 was one of the first games to use the now popular ragdoll physics. The music is composed by Jesper Kyd.

Gameplay

The gameplay of Hitman: Codename 47 places an emphasis on stealth rather than recklessness in completing missions. Killing innocents results in penalty fees deducted from 47's mission rewards, and total depletion of 47's account balance results in the termination of 47's employment. Thus, the player is encouraged to discover better and less obvious ways of completing the missions. In addition to assassinating his targets, 47 must also complete other assignments, such as leading others to safety and recovering certain items, in order to complete the missions. This complex "penalty fee" system was absent in Hitman 2: Silent Assassin and Hitman: Contracts but returned in the most recent installment, Hitman: Blood Money.

Story

Hitman: Codename 47 begins with a scene showing 47 waking up and being ordered, by a mysterious voice, to perform various tasks, such as scaling and jumping over obstacles, changing clothes and using weaponry. This serves as the training level. At the end, 47 kills a guard and takes his clothes in order to escape. The man behind the voice sees this on a survellience camera, sits back, and laughs, as he has delibrately set up 47's escape.
One year later, 47 is a professional assassin in the employ of the International Contract Agency (ICA). 47 is sent around the globe on a series of missions to eliminate four global criminal masterminds.
His four major targets are:
*Lee Hong, leader of the Red Dragon Triad in Hong Kong.
*Pablo Belisario Ochoa, a Colombian drug lord heavily based on Tony Montana from Scarface. The game goes even as far as to name the level where you kill him 'Say hello to my little friend' and also contains a mansion, where he can be killed in a very similar style to Scarface.
*Franz Fuchs, an Austrian terrorist, whether he is based on the real Franz Fuchs is unknown.
*Arkadij Jegorov (aka Boris Ivanovich Duruska), a notorious weapons smuggler and gunrunner.
With the exception of Franz Fuchs, there are one or more prelude missions that lead up to the actual hit on the targets.
Throughout his missions 47 is able to collect letters written to his targets by other targets, suggesting that these four people somehow know each other. Furthermore, all four of his targets were once part of the French Foreign Legion at about the same time and seem to contact each other regarding an experimental human.
47's final mission takes him to a sanitarium in Romania, where he is assigned to kill Odon Kovacs, one of the doctors there. When 47 checks in, the same man from the training mission is notified and calls the police. A heavily-armed S.W.A.T. unit storms in and sweeps the building for 47. After slaying his target and disguising himself in the Doctor's labcoat, 47 infiltrates deeper and learns the truth behind his existence: 47 is the result of a cloning experiment which combined the genetic material of each of his four previous targets (Lee Hong, Pablo, Franz, and Boris), plus that of Dr. Ort-Meyer's DNA. The experiments were in the pursuit of creating a flawless human being.[2] Ort-Meyer engineered 47's "escape" from the asylum in order to test his performance in the real world. It is not explicitly stated, but may be assumed through the cutscenes and letters that Ort-Meyer secretly ordered 47 to kill his associates because they wanted to use the clones for their own purposes, something Ort-Meyer was unwilling to allow.
47 uncovers a sophisticated lab beneath the hospital. In response, Ort-Meyer unleashes a squad of "Mr. 48s", an improved, mindlessly loyal series of clones.[3] In the final showdown, 47 has the option of killing Ort-Meyer right away or hesitating, a choice which will determine the game ending. When 47 bursts into the Doctor's lab, Ort-Meyer first mistakes him for another 48. If the player fails to subdue Ort-Meyer in time, he will attack 47 with a stungun and place him back under confinement. If 47 shoots Ort-Meyer, the Doctor will stumble to the floor and mutter, "I didn't even recognise my own son." 47 kneels down to Ort-Meyer, then forcefully breaks his neck.
